Welcoming the World Community Project

Inspire Mark - Inspired by London 2012

In Partnership with Made In England (Arts Council England and BBC), Lake District World Heritage Site Project, the Lake District National Park Authority, Lanternhouse International and South Lakeland District Council.

This project was a distinctive but integral part of Lakes Alive which has at its core world-class outdoor performances and arts events and festivals across the whole of Cumbria.

The project involved 200 local people creating their own visual spectacle which will be part of future Lakes Alive events and festivals as well as standing in its own right as an original and distinctive visual spectacle for the outdoors. They worked with internationally-recognised designer and flag-maker Wendy Meadley and a team of specially-trained North West-based artists on this ambitious project.

The focus and theme for the project was to be "Inspired by the Landscape". It explored what kind of images and messages its participants wanted to portray to the wider world in the run-up to 2012. They focused on how the landscape has and continues to define local identity and explored what their aspirations are for the future image and identity of Cumbria as it moves towards World Heritage Status.

The artists worked with participants on how to reflect their ideas through colours and designs and made a series of 100 stunning, large-scale flags for the outdoors. Each group stands alone as an impressive, coherent display and the cumulative effect of the full 100 is awesome.

The world premiere of all 100 flags was at Lakes Alive's 'flagship' (!) festival, Mintfest at the end of August 2009, where all participants were able to come together to see and celebrate their work. There was a subsequent installation at the Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole and the flags have also been leant out to help dress a number of community events around the county.
